Congratulations Belize on 44 Years of Independence!

Happy 44th

It still makes me smile to know that I am older than this country that I now call home. The world continues to change and since Belize became an independent nation this country has changed significantly. Then when I look at how this Garifuna village of Hopkins has changed over just the last 10 years, the measured progress has been meteoric. The population continues to grow, more roads have been paved, new businesses open and others continue to expand, more visitors are being attracted to the village and so much more is happening.

In spite of all this change and progress, Hopkins remains a unique Belize experience. The vibe of Hopkins centres around the culture of the Garifuna people and the legacy of being a fishing village. If you’re looking for rush and bustle you might be disappointed. But if you prefer to enjoy paradise in the sun with the friendliest of people in a laid back setting, while your skin is caressed by the Caribbean Sea’s breezes — then welcome to our paradise.

Culinary experiences have also blossomed and continue to bloom all over the country. Being a chef, this is something that greatly delights me. And when you come to Hopkins you would be hard pressed to eat at every restaurant in the village during a vacation stay. From Hudut (a popular local Garifuna dish) to Lobster, and almost everything in between, you’ll likely be able to enjoy it in Hopkins — season permitting.

Even though Hopkins is primarily a Garifuna village, it strongly represents the mix of people and cultures that makes Belize the unique and welcoming place that it is. And all ages come together for work and for celebrations.

As I have said, the country is developing in leaps and bounds and a few things that spring to mind are;

A Petroleum Operations (Offshore Zone Moratorium) Bill was unanimously passed in 2017, placing an indefinite ban on offshore oil drilling to protect the Belize Barrier Reef.

In 2024, Belize was recognized as the Leading Sustainable Destination at the World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards, highlighting its innovative Blue Bond program.

Belize has achieved one of the strongest technical compliance ratings globally for its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism efforts, earning a regional first for its success in combating proliferation financing. In connection to increased financial security, new redesigned, more secure, paper money has been introduced into circulation. So if you’ve visited Belize in the past and are coming back again, you’ll find new faces that reflect our independence on our paper money.

A new tertiary care hospital is scheduled to begin construction in the capital this year. And so much more has been achieved and is in the pipeline as Belize’s progress moves on.
So let me say once more,
Happy 44th year of independence Belize, keep on doing great things!
